How to write a Canadian résumé

Canadian employers expect a résumé of one or two pages that shows what you did and what came of it. Put your strongest, most recent experience first.

What to leave out

Do not include a photo, your date of birth, marital status, religion, nationality or Social Insurance Number (SIN). Employers in Canada do not ask for these, and human rights laws limit how they can be used in hiring.

Write achievements, not duties

Start each line with an action word and add a number where you can: "Trained 12 new staff" says more than "Responsible for training". Keep each line short.

Make it easy for tracking systems to read

Many employers screen résumés with software first. Use plain section headings (Experience, Education, Skills), a simple layout, and the words used in the job posting where they truly describe your work.

Experience from outside Canada

List it like any other job, with the city and country. Explain what the employer does if the name is not known here. If you studied abroad, you can note that your credential was assessed, if it was.

Tailor it to each job

Change the summary and the order of your achievements for each application so the most relevant ones come first. Save a copy of each version you send.
