How to Get Canadian PR without Prior Canadian Work Experience

Let’s be clear that gaining Canadian permanent residenceIf you have no work experience in Canada, the best hope for obtaining PR status is to apply for one of the Canada Express Entry Category-Based Selection draws.The CBS Draws were introduced in 2023 to invite candidates with relevant employment experience in certain fields to fill labor gaps in the employment market in Canada.

In order to be considered for Express Entry draws based on categories, you must:

1. Meet the minimum eligibility requirements for Express Entry, which must include eligibility for any of the three programs supported by Express Entry. This means you must have eligibility for Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program, or Federal Skilled Trades Program, and
2. At least six months of continuous, full-time employment in the required occupation, or an equivalent period in a part-time capacity, in the last three years. This employment experience may be in Canada or internationally.

How to Maximize Your PR Chances

So, even if you do not fall into the categories mentioned above, you can increase your chances by following such steps: 

1. Confirming that your work experience corresponds with that of the job listed

If there is a category mentioned that relates to your job, it is important that there is a link between your past work experience and the NOC of the job that you’re claiming.IRCC evaluates whether the work experience that you claim relates to the job that is in question by checking whether it fits the definition of that job. To make sure that this is the case, you can look at the job that you do and compare it with the job that is mentioned in the NOC. You were required to do most of the important duties mentioned in your NOC job. 

2. Analysis of Recent CRS cut-off scores in category Draws and calculation of your CRS score 

After you have a notion that your occupation is eligible, you should look at the cut-offs for the latest draws for your category.

Not every category is drawn frequently-for example, there were no STEM or agriculture category draws in 2025 at the time of writing. Invitations are distributed entirely at IRCC’s discretion.

In 2025, the lowest CRS cut-offs appeared under French language draws amongst all CBS draws.
